In the sacred land of Palestine, we extend heartfelt wishes to people around the globe on the joyous occasion of Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.
Over two millennia ago, the city of Bethlehem bore witness to the birth of Jesus Christ, a Palestinian messenger whose light continues to illuminate the lives of millions worldwide. As Palestinians, we remain steadfast in our quest for freedom, drawing inspiration from Jesus's legacy, and dedicating ourselves to the pursuit of lasting and comprehensive peace.
In Bethlehem, where Christmas is celebrated under the weight of occupation, the enduring spirit of our people prevails. Despite decades of hardship and attempts to reshape the landscape of Palestine, the essence of our identity remains unaltered. We stand resolute on our homeland, with our national and cultural identity pulsating with vitality more than ever.
As we gather on this Christmas Eve, our prayers extend to the millions who are unjustly deprived of their right to worship in their own homelands. We hold in our hearts the people of Gaza, living under prolonged siege, and those in Bethlehem who face obstacles to their prayers. Our thoughts also embrace our brethren in the Deheisheh refugee camp in Beirut, along with all Palestinian Muslim and Christian refugees who, in 1948, were forcibly displaced from their homes and cities, enduring the hardships of life in enforced exile.
Our prayers reach out to the churches and mosques in Jerusalem, serving as a poignant reminder to the world of the Arab identity intrinsic to our occupied capital. Our heartfelt wishes extend to the people of Beit Jala, particularly the 58 Palestinian Christian families. May God grant them strength and unwavering determination in their peaceful struggle against the annexation wall, a barrier that encroaches upon their lands and future.
To these families, we offer assurance that their struggle resonates far beyond the borders of Palestine. Their prayers and actions have compelled numerous world leaders to address the Cremisan issue in our collective meetings. Intense pressure has been applied on Israel regarding this matter, as well as other concerns raised by civil society campaigns, underscoring the profound significance and merit of nonviolent peaceful resistance.
Regrettably, on this occasion, we acknowledge that the number of Bethlehem residents lighting candles in Santiago, Chicago, San Pedro Sula, Melbourne, and Toronto exceeds those in Bethlehem itself. To them, we pledge an unwavering commitment. We will spare no effort and continue our diligent work to ensure their freedom to decide where they spend their Christmas vacation.
In our homeland, Christians are not merely a minority; they are an integral and cherished part of the Palestinian people. Representing diverse denominations, including Orthodox, Catholic, Armenian, Syriac, Lutheran, Anglican, Coptic, and Roman Catholic, they contribute to the vibrant mosaic of a free, sovereign, democratic, and pluralistic Palestine—a vision articulated in our Declaration of Independence and constitutional draft.
Looking ahead to the anticipated visit of Pope Francis next year, we extend a warm invitation to pilgrims from every corner of the globe to explore Palestine and its sacred sites. We foresee this momentous occasion as a unique opportunity for Christians worldwide to forge deeper connections with their brethren in Palestine. With hope in our hearts, we trust that His Holiness Pope Francis will impart a powerful message of justice and peace, resonating not only with the Palestinian people but also reaching the hearts of people across the world.
As we joyfully celebrate this Christmas season, it brings me immense pleasure to share the news that the Church of the Nativity has been rightfully recognized and included in UNESCO's esteemed World Heritage List. This sacred site is currently undergoing significant renovation efforts under my patronage, with close coordination facilitated by the Presidential Committee in collaboration with church leaders.
In the spirit of unity, I extend a heartfelt invitation to our global friends to join hands in contributing to the restoration and upkeep of this revered location.
Simultaneously, we are actively engaged in ongoing negotiations with Israel, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to fostering a just and lasting peace in the region. Our goal includes bringing an end to the occupation of the Holy Land and establishing an independent Palestinian state, characterized by full sovereignty within the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital. Your support and solidarity in these efforts are invaluable as we work towards a more harmonious and equitable future.
